A Canadian parliamentary delegation led by Member of Parliament Harold Albrecht paid an official visit to Armenia from September 6-10, 2010. Mr. Albrecht is the chair of the Canada-Armenia Parliamentary Friendship Group.
The President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan received the Canadian delegation. President Sargsyan welcomed the group to Armenia and noted that Armenia and Canada are cooperating efficiently in bilateral and multilateral formats. The President highlighted the importance of developing more active inter-parliamentarian relations. “Canada is an important state, with a powerful economic and democratic system.” President Serzh Sargsyan said he appreciates the 2006 decision for the recognition of the Armenian Genocide “We are grateful to the Parliament and Government of Canada for their position on the recognition of the Armenian Genocide.”
The delegation visited with their colleagues in the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia and met speaker Hovik Abrahamyan, Armenian Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan and Edward Nalbandyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs also received the Parliamentary delegation for a very productive discussions.
The parliamentary delegation headed to the spiritual birthplace of Armenian Christianity, the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin, where they were greeted by His Eminence Bishop Bagrat Galstanian, Primate of the Armenian Church Canadian Diocese. Canadian politicians toured the complex of the Holy See of Etchmiadzin and visited the Mother Cathedral.
The delegation visited the Armenian Genocide Museum and the adjacent memorial site.
On September 7, Mr. Harold Albrecht also met with Asatur Nahapetyan, the General Secretary of The Union of Evangelical Christian Baptist Churches of Armenia.
It is a blessing that Mr. Albrecht, who was previously involved in pastoral ministry, is now in political life and that he is both a good friend of Armenia and supportive of all Armenian issues. Revd Asatur Nahapetyan said: “It was a blessing to meet our dear Brother in Christ Harold Albrecht, at the same time to pray together and praise God for His love, grace and mercy towards nations”.
